[Supper Snapshots Yogyakarta] Packing and Preparing for the Exhibition

We only had less than a month to prepare our exhibition in Yogyakarta, but luckily we had more experience this time. After receiving the latest design from Titing, I quickly printed all promotion materials (posters, postcards, and flyers) at our regular printing shop Rakyat printworks.

The hardest part was the packing of the frames. Our past experiences showed that we had very little skill or material on wrapping the frames. At least five frame glasses were broken during shipping to and from Surabaya, and after fixing them all, three glasses broke during shipping from and to Bali. So I had to make thicker wraps. :-)

Another problem was that we would not be able to re-pack the frames after the exhibition finishes, so I decided to make 'package wraps' - therefore the people from LIR could easily wrap back the frames, put them in the boxes, and send them back to us. At first I wanted to sew them, but I soon realised it would take forever to finish. So I decided to glue them together with clear adhesive tapes.

We still had used bubble wraps from our previous exhibition, but after careful calculation, I found that we still needed more of them. So I went to my favourite stationery shop in town, Lee Ie Seng at Pasar Baru, to buy 7 metres of bubble wraps.

The making of the pockets took much longer time than I had expected. It took me around a week to get everything nicely wrapped.

After wrapping all the frames with bubble wraps, I found another problem: finding the right-size box that fit. I found two boxes that fit the big and the small frames, but to fit the medium frames, that took hours and hours of assembling three available boxes into one.

It took me around a week to finish the packing, but it was really worth all the efforts :-)

[Supper Snapshots Bali] Preparation

We started to install our photos for our Supper Snapshots exhibition at Mangsi Coffee by midnight, after the cafe has closed. Some of the employees were still around and they were very helpful when we needed to borrow some tools for the installation.

But our hero (or heroine, to be exact) of the night was Tria, without whom we probably wouldn't be able to have the exhibition by the next day. She brought us the drill - the very much needed tool - as we were told that the wall shouldn't be nailed. So the drill was a vital component for our exhibition.

First we measured the walls for the photos to hang and drill holes on the two walls. Then we painted the red wall, to cover all those mark tapes and scratches. I had no paint apron whatsoever so I invented one using a big plastic bag from Ace Hardware. Luckily they exactly fit me :P

As we waited for the red paint to dry, we took the frames out of the big block of packaging. Unfortunately, we found some of the framing glasses were broken. Or actually, shattered. I got a couple of tiny pieces stuck in my palm but luckily I could get them out (with the help of Tria and the girl from Mangsi).

While we were painting, Tria helped us folding the flyers and livetweeting our preparation. [see our previous blog]

Finally, after working for six hours, we finished installing the photos. We could all go home (or in my case, back to Nusa Dua to work) and prepared for the opening the next day - eh I mean later that day. Hoera!

[Supper Snapshots Exhibition Bali] Preparation #livetweet

Our media partner Rekam Jejak has made livetweets during our preparation.

We would like to thank Tria, the co-founder of the small collective, who did not only covered our exhibition but also helped us during the installation - including carrying a drill! We will tell you about that later in our next post. For now, here are some screenshots from her livetweets.

This morning, after we finally finished installing the photos for the Supper Snapshots featuring Studiomili exhibition at Mangsi Coffee Bali.

Big thanks to our hero of the night, Tria, without whom this exhibition would probably have to be rescheduled.

The opening's tonight!
See you!

ps: Photos from the preparation will be uploaded soon ;-)

[Supper Snapshots Surabaya] preparation

On Friday midday Titing and I took a taxi to carry all the framed photos to c2o library in downtown Surabaya.
We were greeted by Tinta and Yuli, and Charlie the cat and her 'latest' four kittens.

We unloaded the suitcase and arranged the photos on the floor before finally installing them at the window bars.
Unfortunately, we found that one of the frames' glass was broken, but we still display that photo nevertheless.

After knowing which photos went to which part of the window, we started to hang them on the window bars -
which required one of us hanging on the window ledge outside to tie the frames to the bars with strings.

It was a hot and humid day and we easily got tired after a short period of work so we had a lot of pauses and took some photos of the kittens taking some naps..

At the end of the day we finally finished installing the photos (hoera!) and arranging the postcards, zines, name cards, etc.

And some photos from the cozy library..
